HOBOKEN, N.J. ?? One of the most densely populated square miles in the U.S. is still full of floodwater and still out of power, and residents are starting to run out of patience with post-Sandy life.

?They?re saying we might not have power till Monday,? said Jessica Van Binsbergen, 28, a Hoboken, N.J., resident, who was waiting for a ferry to Manhattan. ?There?s a lot of flooding where I live. I?m headed to a friend?s.?

Van Binsbergen, her cat in tow, was standing in a line of hundreds of people ?? all of whom were eager to get out of Hoboken, a densely packed city of about 50,000 people along the Hudson River. Water up to four feet high remained pooled in some areas of the city, and flooded many of the basement apartments that line the streets; on Wednesday, National Guard vehicles arrived to assist with rescues and delivering meals to stranded people.

?It?s been nonstop,? the officer, who said he wasn?t authorized by the city to speak on the record, told NBC News as he and another officer, both wearing high rain boots, waded over to an apartment surrounded by deep floodwaters to help a woman with a liver condition. ?We started doing rescues 28 hours ago and haven?t slept.?

Three of Hoboken?s four firehouses were flooded by Sandy, Battalion Chief Louis Moyeno said.

?This is the only operational firehouse left,? he said, standing outside Hoboken Fire Department, Engine No. 2 on Washington Street. ?The water has receded, but there is no power to any of the other firehouses, and there?s water damage.?

Omar Vicioso, 31, said Sandy poured water into his basement, and left cars floating in his street. He was eager to get back to his work at a boutique store in Manhattan, he said, but wasn?t sure when that would happen.

?All the cars were scattered around,? he said. ?I don?t have a car -- I usually take public transportation -- but obviously that?s not happening. With my phone down, the PATH [train]down, the buses not working, it?s kind of a waiting game.?

A couple blocks away, William Mirlas, a contractor with a water removal company, was pumping water from a Hoboken resident?s home.

?He had four to five feet [in here],? Mirlas said. ?When I opened the door to his room, it was just like a movie: The water came in from outside, just like a river.?

In addition to the man?s furniture, his wallet and clothing were soaking wet, Mirlas said.

While the National Guard was assisting local crews with rescue efforts, residents tried to keep from going stir-crazy.

Amid the darkness that encased nearly all of Hoboken, there was one bright spot: One neighborhood had power, and its inhabitants were happy to share.

In other parts of Hoboken,? loud sump pumps reverberated down streets where fake cobwebs and other Halloween trimmings decorated darkened, flooded storefronts and homes. But on and around 11^th Street, residents seemed? to be having a block party rather than making a post-hurricane clamor for electricity.

John and Jeanne-Marie Scura, who live on Garden Street near 11^th, have four children ?? but by Wednesday morning, a group of about 15 kids had settled in comfortably into their home, happy to take advantage of their TV and computer.

?We never lost power,? John Scura said. ?People were asking us if they could charge their stuff because they saw our lights on. People brought food [in exchange].?

Their electricity luck didn?t extend to their local pharmacy, however, where the Scuras were trying to get antibiotics for one of their kids, who had strep throat.

Dale Shulmistra, his girlfriend, and their dog came to hang out and recharge their cell phones from a few blocks away. ?The generosity ?? ?the thoughtfulness of these people is fantastic. I?ve seen a couple of them before, talked to a couple before. It?s nice to hear other people?s stories [from Sandy].?

The power party attracted dozens of people throughout the day on both sides of the street, where power strips hung from extension cords out of first-floor windows.

?Do you guys need some coffee?? Theresa Howard, 47, who put up the fliers ?and organized the event yesterday, yelled to people as they walked down the street.

?Someone said this restores their faith in mankind. There?s just so much bad stuff going in , this is just such a simple thing, it was all we could do,? she told NBC News. ?People are really thankful ? Even a police officer said, ?This is what makes Hoboken so great. This is what it used to be.??

Meanwhile Wednesday, President Barack Obama toured New Jersey's battered coastline,?saying the federal government was "going to be here for the long haul"?for that state and 15 others dealing with destruction and power outages after Sandy, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered that Halloween trick-or-treating be postponed in his state until Monday due to unsafe conditions.

Sandy killed at least 47 people in the U.S. after having killed at least?71 in the Caribbean.

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

Romney making a serious play for Pennsylvania

It's a tradition for Republican presidential candidates to pour money into Pennsylvania with little to show for it -- the state hasn't picked a Republican for the office in 24 years. But a week before the election, the Romney campaign says it is making a serious play for the Keystone State.

In a memo released Tuesday, campaign manager Rich Beeson argued that Pennsylvania is a "unique opportunity" for Romney. And the campaign seems to be putting its money where its mouth is, placing statewide ad buys that should begin airing on television Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

"The western part of the Keystone State has become more conservative (and President Obama's war on coal is very unpopular there), and Mitt Romney is more competitive in the voter-rich Philadelphia suburbs than any Republican nominee since 1988," the memo states. "This makes Pennsylvania a natural next step as we expand the playing field."

Recent polls show that the Romney campaign may be on to something. Romney began to gain on President Obama in September and that continued in October after his strong performance in the first debate. The TPM PollTracker Average has Obama leading Romney by just three points.

Since Romney's post-debate bounce, the campaign has claimed that the momentum in the race remains with the former governor, a strategy that the Pennsylvania ad buys fits into as well. But the Obama campaign called Romney's proclaimed efforts to expand the map a bluff.

"The Romney campaign wants you to think it's expanding the map, but it's not," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call with reporters Monday, after news that a super PAC supporting Romney was running ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. "They tried this before: a month ago they were going to surge in Michigan, then they weren't. A couple of weeks ago too they were going to surge in Maine...then they weren't."

Nevertheless, the Obama campaign will also begin running ads in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets in a response to the super PAC. On Monday, the campaign said it would do this out of an abundance of caution.

If a last-ditch Republican effort to win Pennsylvania sounds familiar, that's because Sen. John McCain did it in 2008. Two weeks before that election, McCain's political director held a conference call with reporters in which he argued McCain had a good shot at winning the state even though polls at the time generally showed McCain trailing Obama by 10 to 15 points. Ultimately, Obama won the state by 10 points.

Though 2012 is not 2008, this is the scenario the Obama campaign recalled in their response to Romney's Pennsylvania effort.

"Three things are now absolutely clear in this race - we have a significant early vote advantage in states from North Carolina to Nevada, there is no Romney momentum in the battleground states, and the Romney campaign has found itself with a tremendously narrow and improbable path to 270 electoral votes," Messina said in a statement Tuesday, responding to new Romney ad buys. "Now, like Republicans did in 2008, they are throwing money at states where they never built an organization and have been losing for two years."

New York City floods as Sandy slams into eastern U.S.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of people in the eastern United States awoke on Tuesday to flooded homes, fallen trees and widespread power outages caused by the giant storm Sandy, which swamped New York City's subway system and submerged streets in Manhattan's financial district.

At least 15 people were reported killed in the United States by Sandy, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country, which dropped just below hurricane status before making landfall on Monday night in New Jersey.

More than 1 million people in a dozen states were under orders to evacuate as the massive system plowed westward.

One disaster forecasting company predicted economic losses could ultimately reach $20 billion, only half insured.

The storm interrupted the presidential campaign a week before Election Day and closed U.S. financial markets for two days.

Sandy, which was especially imposing because of its wide-ranging winds, brought a record storm surge of almost 14 feet to downtown Manhattan, well above the previous record of 10 feet during Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service said.

Water poured into the subway system and tunnels that course under the city, raising concerns that the world's financial capital could be hobbled for days.

"Hitting at high tide, the strongest surge and the strongest winds all hit at the worst possible time," said Jeffrey Tongue, a meteorologist for the weather service in Brookhaven, New York.

Hurricane-force winds as high as 90 miles per hour were recorded, he said.

"Hopefully it's a once-in-a-lifetime storm," Tongue said.

Large sections of New York City were without power, and transportation in the metropolitan area was at a standstill.

"In 108 years our employees have never faced a challenge like the one that confronts us now," Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joseph Lhota said in a statement.

It could take anywhere from 14 hours to four days to get the water out of the flooded subway tunnels, the MTA said.

"The damage has been geographically very widespread" throughout the subway, bus and commuter train system, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said.

50-PLUS HOMES BURN

The unprecedented flooding hampered efforts to fight a massive fire that destroyed more than 50 homes in Breezy Point, a private beach community on the Rockaway barrier island in the New York City borough of Queens, the Fire Department of New York said.

Two people in New York City reportedly died in the storm - a man in a house hit by a tree and a woman who stepped into an electrified puddle of water. Two other people were killed in suburban Westchester County, north of New York City, and two others were reported killed on suburban Long Island.

A motor vehicle death in Massachusetts was blamed in part on the bad weather. Two other people were killed in Maryland in storm-related incidents, state authorities said, and deaths also were reported in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, CNN said.

Toronto police also recorded one death - a woman hit by flying debris.

More than 7 million people in several states were without electricity due to the storm, which crashed ashore late on Monday near the gambling resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The storm was plowing westward over south-central Pennsylvania, still packing near hurricane-force winds as strong as 65 miles per hour (105 km per hour), the National Weather Service said.

Wind gusts, rain and flooding were likely to extend well into Tuesday, but without the storm's earlier devastating power, said AccuWeather meteorologist Jim Dickey.

"Overall, the worst has past," Dickey said.

The storm's wind field stretched from South Carolina north to the Canadian border and from West Virginia to a point in the Atlantic Ocean halfway to Bermuda, easily one of the largest ever seen, the National Hurricane Center said.

Heavy snow fell in higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains inland.

NEW JERSEY TOWNS FLOODED

Three towns in New Jersey, just west of New York, were inundated with up to 5 feet of water after a levee on the nearby Hackensack River was overtopped or breached, officials said. Rescuers were using boats to aid the marooned residents of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt.

In New York, a crane partially collapsed and dangled precariously from a 90-story luxury apartment building under construction in Midtown Manhattan.

Much of the city was deserted, as its subways, buses, commuter trains, bridges and airports were closed. Power outages darkened most of downtown Manhattan as well as Westchester County, affecting more than 650,000 customers, power company Consolidated Edison said.

"This is the largest storm-related outage in our history," said John Miksad, Con Ed's senior vice president for electric operations. The previous record was the more than 200,000 customers hit with outages last year during Hurricane Irene, the utility said.

Neighborhoods along the East and Hudson rivers in Manhattan were underwater, as were low-lying streets in Battery Park near Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center once stood.

A security guard at 7 World Trade Center, Gregory Baldwin, was catching some rest in his car after laboring overnight against floodwaters that engulfed a nearby office building.

"The water went inside up to here," he said, pointing to his chest. "The water came shooting down from Battery Park with the gusting wind."

Power and back-up generators failed at New York University Hospital, forcing patients to be moved elsewhere for care.

In Lower Manhattan, firefighters used inflatable orange boats to rescue utility workers stranded for three hours by rising floodwaters inside a power substation.

One of the Con Ed workers pulled from the floodwater, Angelo Amato, said he was part of a crew who had offered to work through the storm.

"This is what happens when you volunteer," he said.

With a week to go before the election, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled scheduled campaign events. Obama left the campaign trail to return to Washington to monitor the storm and Romney curtailed political events to show respect for the storm's victims.

U.S. stock markets were set to be closed on Tuesday. They closed on Monday for the first time since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The federal government in Washington was closed for a second day on Tuesday, and schools were shut up and down the East Coast.

Sandy killed 66 people in the Caribbean last week before pounding U.S. coastal areas.

NYC Marathon planning moves forward after Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) ? The 26 miles might be the easy part.

The biggest challenge for this New York City Marathon on Sunday could be getting to the start, not the finish.

The mayor of storm-battered New York says the race is still on, but flying in runners from out of town will be tricky, and there may not be a subway to get everyone to the starting line.

Superstorm Sandy shut down transportation, closed airports, flooded streets and left scores of neighborhoods without power ? formidable obstacles for the organizers.

Still, they were moving forward with plans Tuesday, leaving open the possibility of changes from past years.

"The marathon has always been a special day for New Yorkers as a symbol of the vitality and resiliency of this city," New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said in a statement.

The 26.2-mile route through the five boroughs mostly avoids the areas hit hardest by flooding. Organizers were expecting nearly 50,000 runners before the storm hit. However they have no idea how many will actually make it to start the race.

"We will keep all options open with regard to making any accommodations and adjustments necessary to race day and race weekend events," she said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it could be four or five days before the subways were running again, which means they may not be available on race day. Commuter trains may not be operating normally, either.

The starting line is on Staten Island and about half the entrants normally would take the ferry and others would take buses through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. Both were closed because of flooding.

The marathon was projected to pour $340 million into the city, but it also requires major support from municipal departments strained by the monster storm that wreaked havoc Monday evening.

"The city is rightfully focused on assessment, restoration and recovery," Wittenberg said.

JFK and Newark airports were set to reopen Wednesday and LaGuardia remains closed.

Nearly 20,000 amateur international runners were scheduled to fly in for the race. Family and friends of runners must somehow find a way to their viewing spots.

Runners who can't get to New York should have until Saturday instead of Wednesday to withdraw from the race and reserve a spot in the 2013 marathon, but they won't get a refund and will have to pay again next year.

Race organizers expected to reschedule the elite runners' flights to get them in on time. The 43rd edition of the marathon is set to include three Olympic medalists and the reigning women's world champion.

Kenya's Wilson Kipsang won bronze in the Olympic men's marathon. His challengers include 2011 Chicago Marathon champ Moses Mosop of Kenya, 2010 New York winner Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and top American Meb Keflezighi.

In 2009, Keflezighi became the first American since Alberto Salazar in 1982 to win New York. He was fourth at the Olympics.

Ethiopia's Tiki Gelana won gold and Russia's Tatyana Arkhipova took bronze in the women's race in London. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya won a world title a year earlier.

Last year's runner-up in New York, Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba, doesn't have to get on a plane to make the race. She knows exactly what the city is going through ? Deba lives in the Bronx.

The home of U.S. Rep. Bob Turner was one of the casualties of the fire that engulfed Breezy Point, Queens amid Hurricane Sandy, Crain?s reported.

A Washington spokesman for Turner, a Republican who represents parts of Queens and Brooklyn ? Anthony Weiner?s former district ? confirmed that Turner?s primary residence burned down in the fire, which consumed an estimated 80 homes late yesterday and early today, Crain?s said.

While Turner remained at his house until late in the storm, he and his family made it out of the area safely, a spokesperson told Crain?s.

Is your internal audit plan working at cross purposes with your company strategy? Missed communication opportunities may make it appear that way. I was drawn to that observation in a PwC white paper, ?Aligning Internal Audit: Are you on the right floor?,? which suggests that the role of internal auditors is changing as stakeholders increasingly appreciate their risk management contributions.

Internal auditors add value to their companies by identifying risks as business strategies evolve. That value is diminished if they?re unaware of key decisions taken on the top floor. The objective of a program audit will change if, for example, the company is divesting itself of the program. Bottom line? Seeking strategy intel is vital to earning respect for internal auditors.

Communication style is the other key to helping execs view internal auditors as team players. When reporting results, consider the audience. That means headlining findings for top brass. All the gnarly details should be readily available for anyone who wants to wade through them, but spend your face time (or devote your report cover memo to) identifying the items of concern and your recommendations for dealing with them.

Internal auditors typically have access to all areas of their company. That perspective means that occasionally you?ll have good news to share?for example, efficiencies that can be implemented. The tone with which you communicate this information is just as important as the tone you take in delivering news about potential risks. Buy-in for your suggestions has a lot to do with the way they?re delivered.

Like tone, timing is crucial to maintaining trust with the rest of the company. If you want your audience to become defensive and view you as an adversary, just try springing all your concerns at the end of an audit. As a general rule, keeping business owners and execs informed as you find issues makes for a relationship of respect. No one wants to be blindsided by a problem with no corrective plan in sight.

Finally, weigh your communication options. You may have noticed, as I have, that voice inflections don?t register in digital formats, so sending an email may not always be the best choice. Sometimes picking up the phone or meeting face-to-face enhances communication, and improving the lines of communication within your company is a key step in identifying the risks it faces.

Ready or not? {Finding Happy ? On Bramble Hill

Here she comes.
Or at least that is the rumor. ?Is it just me or is Sandy taking her sweet sweet time actually getting out of here.
I have never watched such a sloooooowwwwwwww moving storm.
But alas?she is whacking us right now.

Since I moved here 20 some years ago I have now sat through many a hurricane or tropical storm and we ALWAYS lose power.
Normally anywhere from 2-14 days. ?So you will understand my less than enthusiastic attitude this go around.
I can?t help but remember last years hurricane and being VERY pregnant. ?No power?lots of heat..lots of contractions.
It was a nightmare.

This year I get to enjoy the peace that comes with no power.
I actually, secretly, don?t mind it sometimes.
Being without power is a forced ?time out?. ?You spend much of your day trying to figure out how to just feed the masses.
It?s a time we all slow down and talk to our neighbors?sitting in yards watching the kids all play outside.
Or neighbor helping neighbor pick up the debris and fix up siding/roofing/ cutting downed trees up.
Or endless hours of family board games.
I have already told everyone in the house that I WILL be winning all Yahtzee rounds tonight. ?For sure.

I suppose secretly ?no power? is kindof ?ok? with me?for a day or two.
That 14 days?.not so much.

That was the game changer in motherhood for me?Isabelle.
She changed things.
I was reminded of just how much she changed me this week, well before I knew there was a ?Sandy?.
I was leaving our playgroup Halloween party to take all three kids to the Pumpkin Patch. ?One of the mothers looked at me and asked ?You are taking ALL THREE by yourself!! To a pumpkin patch!??.
I answered with a ?Heck yeah!? and it didn?t really hit me until later that there was a time that I would never have thought this would be possible. ?A time before Isabelle when taking two babies by myself anywhere seemed?insane.

Isabelle made it not a choice though. ?She taught me bunches about myself.
It all started when she hit us?
We knew she was going to be a big storm but didn?t realize until a few hours before just how?big she was going to be.

At the time we lived in the ?white house? as we all call it now. ?It was smack in the middle of the woods. ?The night it hit we all curled up together in the living room.

The night was horrid. ?When storms hit in the dark it just stinks!
We could hear the trees crashing down all around us but we couldn?t see them?all we could do was huddle in the house.
I remember finally putting Haley in her crib around 4am and laying on the floor beside her because I didn?t want to leave her alone in her room in case something happened.
Adam snoozed on the couch no problem.
We all came out the next morning to find this?.

We had 9 trees down in the front and the back?all up by the root ball.
This is what ?up by the roots? looks like?

What the heck do you do with that?
The homeowners insurance does not cover tree removal unless it is on your house FYI.

One big old hot mess?.

The roads to get out of our neighborhood?ugh?nightmare.

Within two days of no power and no running water (we were on well water at the time)?.the babies and adults were done.
The kids were filthy?anyone with a toddler knows how dirty these little people can get within five seconds outside.
Going days without water was becoming a huge problem with these little people.

We made the decision that I would pack up the 3 year old and toddler up and head down to Daryl parents beach house in Kill Devil Hills N.C.
They had taken the eye of the storm but being a beach town?they were very prepared and already had power again. ?You could only get on the island if you had the resident sticker?which I had.
I was terrified. ?I had never been alone with the babes longer than a day or two.
Could I survive for an unknown amount of days?alone? ?No help or even hint of help within hours of the beach.
Our choices where so limited though?because all of Richmond was without power.
I saw a fist fight over ice?.that was the last straw.
It was time to take the babies somewhere safer. ?I packed them up and went on my way.
Leaving Daryl behind since he still had to go to work everyday. ?It was tough!

We got to the beach?not really sure what I would find there. ?They had clearly been whacked?

But they really did seem to be better off than Richmond was.
The first few days were tough. ?Trying to get them to take naps?bedtimes?three square meals?no down time for me.
By the third day though I had it figured out.
I learned to let go.
Be present.
And just enjoy this time with them.
Going out everyday and playing on the beach?

?

We discovered the best places to view sunsets together each night?

I learned that eating sand?
Rolling in sand?
Basically being covered in sand from head to toe?
Was ok. ?They would survive it and have fun and remember this time as?magical.

?

Daryl made it down towards the end of the 12 days?of just me and kids.
Poor fella had not been having fun and we were all so happy to see him and have him back with us?

We showed him our new ?secret spots? ?
Our sunsets?

In the end we finally got out power back?
We went home and back to daily life?
But I never stopped taking these kids away?all by myself. ?We go often on ?mommy adventures?.
They are magic you know.
Every mother should know the joy of just ?being? with their children.

Hopefully most mothers don?t require a huge natural disaster to teach them that they have these skills?
they may just not have used them yet.

And yes?I have the pumpkin patch pictures coming up. ?We had a fantastic adventure as always and I even ended up carrying like 9?pumpkins?at the same time. ?The kids never forget these moments you know
Now to see how long we keep power tonight.
It maybe several days without again?if it is?
I may just be packing them all up and hitting the beach again.
I am dying to see how my beloved island has managed to survive this storm

And, btw, the original call for an evacuation plan was for 50 miles...I was at that meeting, but we all agreed that it would be impossible to evacuate 50 miles, as it includes all of NYC. Then we cut it down to 25 miles, and it still included too much of NYC to be doable. Finally, we went down to 10 miles, which everyone felt was more realistic to evacuate. But the 10 mile evacuation zone isn't based on science, it's based on what is doable in the NY area. 10 miles wasn't enough at Fukishima.

The National AIDS Control Council (NACC) in partnership with the UN Joint Team on AIDS the National Empowerment of People Living with HIV (NEPHAK), KELIN and various legal and human rights organizations will tomorrow 30th October to 31st October 2012 hold the first ever national symposium in Africa on HIV, law and Human Rights as a way of taking forward the findings of the Global Commission on HIV and the Law?s report on HIV and the Law: Risks, Rights and Health.

Anchored on the theme Respect! Protect and Fulfill Human Rights, the symposium aims to initiate a dialogue among legal professionals, law enforcement agencies, communities of PLHIV including key and affected populations, service providers, government officials and institutions mandated to protect and uphold human rights on how to utilize the law and human rights to create an enabling environment for prevention, treatment, care and support of those living with and affected by HIV.

The national symposium is expected to attract over 300 participants from the 47 counties in Kenya. The two day event will entail plenary sessions, workshops and expert panel discussions on: Discrimination & equality, protection of PLHIV, punitive laws and how they affect access to services for key and affected populations, treatment rights in relations to access to healthcare, testing for HIV, property rights and the role of cultural practices on HIV.

An awards ceremony will be held on the 31st of October, at the end of the symposium to honour and celebrate individuals and organizations that have made outstanding and positive contributions to the protection of rights and dignity of key populations and those infected and affected by HIV.

KELIN has been nominated by its partners for awards in the categories of advancing children?s rights in HIV, the cross between culture and HIV and Human rights in HIV treatment.

This event provides an opportunity for KELIN, as it continues to be a key player in promotion and protection of HIV related human rights in Eastern Africa.

Prospect, the referees' union, has released a statement offering its "full support" to Mark Clattenburg after Chelsea lodged an official complaint claiming he had used "inappropriate language" during their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Premier League encounter became a heated affair after Clattenburg sent off two Chelsea players in quick succession whilst the game was still tightly poised at 2-2.

"Prospect is committed to helping to eradicate racism in football and in society generally," the statement read.

"In the context of that commitment, Prospect is offering full support to Mark Clattenburg in relation to the allegations made against him.

"It is now important that the allegations are fully investigated through the proper process as quickly as possible.

"We will be making no further comment at this stage."

Clattenburg will now wait to hear whether the FA will launch an investigation into the allegations.

Your Home Security Camera Will One Day Catch ... - Business Insider

Imagine if your home security system could sound the alarm a few minutes before bandits broke in.

That's what researchers at Carnegie Mellon are working on with their new Mind's Eye program, reports Phys.org. They are developing software that not only records what people are doing, but can predict what they are about to do, and can deduce what happened off camera.

It's kind of like the TV show "Person of Interest" but for real.

For instance, if a woman enters a building without a box and leaves with one, the Mind?s Eye program can deduce that the box was taken from the building. Or if a person walks up to another person and holds out an object, the program can predict that the other person will take the object.

That sounds simple enough for a human mind, but the tech behind it pretty complicated. Researchers are generating 3D models of human activities. They have to teach the software to recognized these activities. Then teach it to recognize these activities during a live video.

Such software would have all kinds of uses for the military, police and home security.

Carnegie Mellon is one of twelve research teams and three commercial integrators participating in the five-year program that began in 2010 to develop smart video software. It's sponsored by DARPA's Information Innovation Office.
