The New York Post says 39-year-old Meredith Graves was visiting the memorial at the World Trade Center site on Dec. 22 and noticed a sign that said "No guns allowed." The Post reports that Graves asked police where she could check her loaded pistol. She was arrested on a gun-possession charge.

Graves has a legal permit to carry a weapon in Tennessee, but New York's gun laws are stricter.

The Post says Graves posted bond and is due back in court March 19. She faces 3? years in prison if convicted.

?You?d think states would reciprocate with the Second Amendment. She has a license to carry in Tennessee,? her mother-in-law told the Post.

The newspaper says her attorney at Legal Aid did not return phone calls.

Stephen Hawking seeks help to make voice heard

(AP) ? Can you help make Stephen Hawking's voice heard?

The famed British physicist is seeking an assistant to help develop and maintain the electronic speech system that allows him to communicate his vision of the universe. An informal job ad posted to the famed physicist's website said the assistant should be computer literate, ready to travel, and able to repair electronic devices "with no instruction manual or technical support."

Hawking has long struggled against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease which left him almost completely paralyzed.

He lost his real voice in a tracheotomy in 1985, but a wheelchair-mounted computer helps synthesize speech by interpreting the twitches of his face. The synthesizer's robotic monotone has become nearly as famous as Hawking himself, but the computer ? powered by batteries fastened to the back of Hawking's wheelchair ? isn't just for speaking.

It can connect to the Internet over cell phone networks and a universal infrared remote enables the physicist to switch on the lights, watch television, or open doors either at home or at the office.

It's a complicated, tailor-made system, as the ad makes clear. A photograph of the back of Hawking's wheelchair, loaded with coiled wires and electronic equipment, is pictured under the words: "Could you maintain this?"

"If your answer is 'yes,' we'd like to hear from you!" the website says.

Hawking's website says that the job's salary is expected to be about 25,000 pounds ($38,500) a year.

Will There Be a Shortage of Small Business Tech Workers in 2012?

Does your small business rely on high-tech workers to compete? You?re not alone. Increasingly, being up to speed on technology is crucial to business success, which means you need a savvy tech team in-house. But hiring those tech workers might be getting harder?and the risks of making a bad hire might have greater ramifications?in 2012.

it engineer

While national unemployment rates hover near 9 percent, CIO.com reports that as of November, the unemployment rate in the technology industry was just 2.7 percent. Also as of November, the number of job openings rose by 12 percent year-over-year, according to tech hiring site Dice.com. In particular, big cities like New York, Silicon Valley and DC are seeing shortages of qualified tech employees.

For 2012, it?s only going to get worse. CIO says a December survey by Dice.com found that 65 percent of IT hiring managers expect to hire in the first half of 2012, with more than one-fourth planning to increase their IT staff by over 20 percent. Those companies are looking for experienced workers, with the biggest demand being for workers with 6 to 10 years of tech experience and those who are skilled in mobile apps, cloud computing, virtualization, project management, business analytics and Java.

What does it mean to you? First, if you?re looking to hire tech employees, you?re going to face an increasingly competitive marketplace, which will make the ongoing challenge of matching big companies? perks and pay even tougher. Second, even if you?re not hiring, you?ve got reason to worry, as the demand for experienced techies means your key people could get poached.

To keep them happy, you?ll need to offer competitive pay (or better), challenging work and the chance for career growth.

If your key tech workers get lured away, it could put your business at risk in more ways than one. A separate survey from CareerBuilder?s site Sologig.com, reported in TechRepublic, found that a majority of companies had experienced hiring an IT person who wasn?t a good fit.

More than one-third said such bad hires cost them $50,000 or more. ?Rushing to hire was the top reason for bad choices, which resulted in everything from lost time and productivity to harmful effects on morale and even client relationships.

Will you be hiring tech workers in 2012? Or are you just hoping to keep the ones you?ve got? Either way, you?d better start strategizing to ensure you don?t end up short on talent and long on headaches.

MIDDLETOWN ? Only nine of 14 weight classes took the mat in Thursday?s noontime wrestling match between Vinal Tech and the SMSA/University co-op. Of those nine, the Hawks won three (all by pin) but sank to 1-1 on the season as the Hartford co-op took home a 36-30 win at Vinal Tech.

The day started well for Vinal, with Arthur Flejszar earning his second pin of the year in as many matches. Flejszar, who has been wrestling since middle school, used his experience and strength to end the bout in 51 seconds of the first period.

?I pinned in a cradle last match, and this match I got an arm-bar tilt,? said Flejszar, pleased with his performance. ?It was a fairly good match. It was quick.?

At 152 pounds, Kendall Kegley faced an experienced wrestler and succumbed in the first period. Joe Sapia, at 160, gave SMSA senior Brian Knighton a serious tussle, coming out on the short end of an 11-7 score.

SMSA had no wrestler at 172 to face Steve Hall, who took fifth place at the Class M meet last season, and the score after their forfeit stood at 12-9, Vinal.

Zach Marchand at 182 took a first-period lead with a takedown but could not outpoint senior Kenneth Prigdovich, who earned a 5-3 decision with two escapes, a takedown, and a penalty point.

195-pounder Marcus Deren missed an early headlock takedown but came back to pin SMSA?s Quintin Reed in the first period.

?I was happy with Marcus,? said Vinal head coach Anthony Fazzina. ?Marcus is still learning, still developing. Even though he faced a wrestler with less experience than he has, the kid was very strong and athletic. I?m glad he came up with a pin.?

Deren?s pin gave Vinal an 18-12 lead, which 220-pound Gabe Soucie promptly expanded to 24-12 with a 49-second pin.

?I like to play around in neutral, wait for an opportunity to arise, try to capitalize on another person?s mistakes,? said Soucie, who now has two pins in two bouts. ?He was standing up. His knees weren?t bent, he didn?t have a nice low center of gravity. I saw the toss and I went for it. I could have had better position on the bottom, so I let go of the head and arm, got control, ran a power half, flipped him, did my thing.? Continued...

The rest of the afternoon was all SMSA, as heavyweight Zach Dombrowski absorbed a first-period pin, 126-pounder Eli Farland lost a late lead and was pinned in the third period, and 138-pounder Ethan Jones was pinned in the first period.

A forfeit for each team accounted for the remainder of the scoring.

Fazzina, optimistic, looked forward to some adjustments in weight classes, the return of an ill team member, and some hard work all around.

?I?m looking for better conditioning and to get the guys some experience and to get them to polish some of the moves that we?ve started learning,? said Fazzina. ?They just need to practice and get better at the moves and get in better shape as the season goes on.?

Ducks find themselves in a tight place on their first night in Southern California

ANAHEIM, Calif. _ The Oregon Ducks hadn't been in Southern California for 24 hours before they had their first, big pre-Rose Bowl adventure.

?? ?And we're not talking about Tuesday afternoon in Disneyland. In fact, they didn?t have to leave the hotel in which they?re staying for the Jan. 2 Rose Bowl.

?? ?Nine players left the 11th floor of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City Monday night, and were headed down when the elevator came to an abrupt stop between the seventh and eighth floors.

There, it sat, unwilling to move no matter what buttons the players pushed.

?? ?Finally, they reached the hotel staff on the elevator intercom, and settled back to wait for help.

They waited, and waited, and waited.

?? ?"That wasn't the most pleasant experience," said linebacker Josh Kaddu, one of the Hyatt Regency Nine.

?? ?After a while, the players became tired of standing, but there wasn't enough room for all to sit. So they organized. Some players sat down. When one of the standing players became too leg-weary, he traded trade places with one of those seated.

?? ?"We just tapped out," Kaddu said. "When somebody was tired, he tapped somebody, and he would get up. It was teamwork."

Apparently nobody in the elevator suffers from claustrophobia. It?s a good thing, because they were there for two hours.

?? ?"We had music playing," defensive end Dion Jordan said. "We tried to make the most of it. It was kind of nerve wracking to be stuck in the elevator for that long."

?? ?Jordan said off-site help eventually was summoned, and the elevator was brought close enough to the eighth floor for everybody to clamber off.

?? ?Somebody asked Jordan if he had seen the movie "Die Hard," in which actor Bruce Willis has to climb around inside the elevator shaft of a high rise. As coincidence would have it, the movie is set in Century City.

?? ??Thank God we didn't have to do that,? Jordan said.

?? ?The rest of the team was aware of the predicament facing the nine trapped players, which led to some thought about worst-case scenarios.

?? ?Tackle Mark Asper, who wasn?t in the elevator, explained one scenario to defensive back Avery Patterson, one of trapped nine.

?? ? ?I was joking with him,? Asper said. ?I said: ?You were the smallest guy in that elevator. You would have been the first one they ate, man. If it had come down to it, it?s survival of the fittest. You probably would have got eaten.??

?? ?Patterson didn?t find it particularly funny then, and he wasn?t happy when a bunch players piled into an elevator together today.

?? ?Asper said Patterson was concerned about the elevator?s weight limit.

?? ??He was like, ?No, no more,?? Asper said. ?I was like, ?There are five guys in here. This is a 5000-pound capacity elevator. Avery, calm down.? He was like, ?no, man.?

?? ??He is traumatized for life.?

The 9 Oddest Job Interview Questions Asked at Tech Companies in 2011 (Mashable)

When sitting down for a job interview at a top U.S. tech company, you'd typically expect the interviewer to hammer you with questions testing your abilities, past history and knowledge of the company. You wouldn't think it was the time or the place to start exploring solutions to world hunger, but that's exactly what happened to one candidate looking to be a software developer at Amazon. In Glassdoor's annual review of the top 25 oddball questions asked in job interviews in 2011, tech companies feature highly. Although there's just one question from Google on the list, the Wall Street Journal recently profiled the search giant's interview process, highlighting the trademark strangeness of some of the questions.

[More from Mashable: Google+ Now Up to 62 Million Users, Adding 625,000 a Day [REPORT]]

Google's odd questions range from relatively straightforward mathematical brain teasers like, "Using only a four-minute hourglass and a seven-minute hourglass, measure exactly nine minutes--without the process taking longer than nine minutes," to truly head-slapping queries such as, "A man pushed his car to a hotel and lost his fortune. What happened?"

Google isn't alone in this practice. Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and many others have challenged the brains of prospective job candidates in some truly odd ways for a long time. Glassdoor has been publishing a compilation for only since 2009, but the idea has been around a lot longer than that.

[More from Mashable: So You Got a Kindle Fire? Try Our First-Timer Guide]

The "oddball question," of course, is meant to challenge the job candidate to think on his or her feet. It forces the interviewee to reach beyond prepared remarks and start engaging in problem solving on the spot. The best "weird" questions still have some relation to the kind of work the position entails. (For example, questions about finding the correct sequence could relate to jobs involving organizational systems.)

What's the weirdest interview question you've ever gotten? Let us know in the comments, and browse the strangest interview questions from tech companies on Glassdoor's list below.

Breast Cancer Radiation Linked to Raised Heart Risk (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Women who have breast cancer on the left side of the body and who are treated with radiation therapy have a higher risk of developing narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart, researchers say.

A new Swedish study found that the risk of having moderately narrowed coronary arteries was more than four times greater for women who had left-sided breast cancers treated with radiation compared to right-sided breast cancers treated with radiation. The odds were seven times higher for more severe narrowing on the left side versus the right, according to the study published in the Dec. 27 online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

"We suggest that the coronary arteries be regarded as organs at risk in radiation therapy, and that every effort be made to avoid radiation dose to the coronary arteries," wrote study authors led by Dr. Greger Nilsson, of the department of oncology, radiology and clinical immunology at Uppsala University Hospital.

However, it's also important to note that of a group of 8,190 women who had breast cancer, just 199 had to be referred for coronary angiography (a treatment for blocked blood vessels).

"Women need to be aware that there is a risk, but the overall risk is still relatively small, and the benefits of radiation in the treatment of breast cancer still outweigh the risks," said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, are designed to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, healthy cells are often damaged, too. Treatment techniques are constantly being refined, and today's treatments target fewer healthy cells than treatments from years past.

For example, newer radiation techniques help protect the heart and the arteries leading to it, according to Dr. Timothy Zagar, an assistant professor in radiation oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. One such technique is to give bursts of radiation only when a patient is taking a deep breath. During a deep breath, the main artery going to the heart separates from the breast and chest wall, which keeps it away from the radiation.

Zagar, co-author of an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal, said researchers don't know exactly how radiation causes damage to coronary arteries, but it's believed to damage the cells lining the arteries (endothelial cells), which causes inflammation, which can lead to hardening of the arteries.

The current study included women from Sweden who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1970 and 2003. Of the 8,190 women, the researchers found 199 women who had undergone coronary angiography, suggesting significant coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery narrowing (stenosis) is graded on a scale of zero to 5. Zero indicates a healthy blood vessel, while 5 indicates a blocked blood vessel.

When the researchers compared women who'd had radiation treatment on the left side of their body versus the right, they found that the odds of a grade 3 to grade 5 stenosis in a left-sided artery were 4.38 times higher. The odds of a grade 4 or grade 5 stenosis were 7.22 times higher for women who had left-sided breast cancer.

In women who received radiation in high-risk areas near the heart's arteries, the risk of a grade 3 to grade 5 stenosis was nearly twice as high as it was in women who had radiation in low-risk areas, or who didn't have radiation.

Zagar pointed out that this study was done over a long period of time and that changes in the way radiation is delivered would likely result in lower odds of coronary artery stenosis for women treated with radiation today.

In addition, Zagar said, "I don't think this study's findings would justify changing from a lumpectomy [breast-conserving surgery] to a mastectomy [surgical removal of the breast]. Breast-conserving therapy is very important to many women, and the number of coronary events are still low," he added.

"It's important to understand that with all treatments, there are risks," Bernik said. "And, we know that this is one of the risks with radiation of left-sided breast cancer. Women need to keep in mind that they're at increased risk of coronary events and need to follow up with their doctor going forward."

(AP) ? The worst Nigeria offshore oil spill in more than a decade has been contained before reaching the West African nation's coast, officials with Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Monday, less than a week after one of its lines bled crude into the Atlantic Ocean.

An investigation into how the spill of less than 40,000 barrels ? or 1.68 million gallons ? happened remains ongoing, though company officials acknowledged workers only discovered the leak after seeing a sheen of crude in water surrounding its Bonga offshore oil field.

Meanwhile, Shell officials say the company will clean up another spill it discovered while containing its own ? highlighting how prevalent pollution remains in oil-stained Nigeria after more than 50 years of production.

"We can undeniably say we traced our oil ... and stopped it," said Cliff Pain, who manages the Bonga operation for a Shell subsidiary.

Shell organized a helicopter flight Monday for journalists to see the Bonga field ? controlled from a large ship as opposed to a stationary rig ? about 75 miles (120 kilometers) off Nigeria's coast. There, waters appeared free of the oil sheen as ships continued to patrol along the underwater lines linking the vessel to oil fields and transfer buoys for filling tankers.

The leak discovered Dec. 20 came from a break in a flexible line about 360 meters out from the vessel that sends oil to tankers, Pain said. While the vessel has a variety of gauges to check pressure on the line, it wasn't until daylight broke that workers noticed a sheen surrounding the Bonga vessel, he said.

It takes about 25 hours to fill a waiting tanker with 1 million barrels of oil from the vessel, Pain said. That means the leak could have spewed for hours before being noticed.

At its height, Shell statistics show the sheen spread across about 350 square miles (900 square kilometers), matching an estimate earlier issued by an independent watchdog group called SkyTruth. Nigerian government officials previously said the spill only affected an area a third that size

Using ships and aircraft, workers spread chemical dispersants to break up the oil, which also evaporated in the region's warm water and air, said Steve Keedwell, a Shell employee who helped oversee the cleanup operation. Shell ultimately stopped the sheen about 11 miles (18 kilometers) before it made landfall, Pain said.

However, workers then discovered a separate oil spill around the mouth of a river in Delta state, said Mutiu Sunmonu, Shell's Nigeria country chairman. Sunmonu said samples of the oil showed it came from a different source, though the company would clean it up as well.

"When I sighted it myself, my initial reaction was anger, but I told myself: 'You know, you just cannot afford to be angry, just deal with it,'" Sunmonu said.

The Nigerian group Environmental Rights Action, which monitors spills around Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, has blamed Shell for the new spill. Nnimmo Bassey, the group's executive director, could not be immediately reached for comment Monday night.

Shell operates the Bonga field in partnership with Italy's Eni SpA, Exxon Mobil Corp., France's Total SA and the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. It produces about 200,000 barrels of oil a day ? around 10 percent of production in Africa's most populous nation. The field remains shut down and Shell officials offered no estimate Monday of when production could resume at a field vital to Nigeria's government finances.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the United States. However, pollution from spilled oil stains its Niger Delta region, with crude lapping against beaches and leaving a black ring around creeks in an area about the size of Portugal.

Some environmentalists say as much as 550 million gallons of oil poured into the delta during Shell's roughly 50 years of production in Nigeria ? a rate roughly comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. Many blame Shell and foreign companies working in Nigeria for the pollution. However, Shell in recent years has blamed most of its spills on militant attacks or thieves tapping into pipelines to steal crude oil, which ends up sold on the black market or cooked into a crude diesel or kerosene.

Talking with journalists, Sunmonu acknowledged that the limited spill, open ocean and favorable weather had helped Shell quickly contain the spill. If it had been on land, the oil could have sunk into the soil, remaining there for years, he said.

It also would have pushed Shell into negotiations with village elders to clean up the spill, something it often contracts other companies to handle. Many view the company with hostility after its years in the delta, and its employees remain targets of kidnap gangs and militants.

"You don't have communities to contend with" on the ocean, Sunmonu said.

Foxy Move: Palmetto Ford branches into boat sales in deal with Moncks Corner manufacturer

No one would have thought anything unusual when Graham Eubank and Fred Renken struck up a conservation at a party in October.

?Graham and I go back a long way,? Renken said. They?ve both been in business for about 20 years, their families are friends. ?Fred?s wife taught one of my children in kindergarten,? Eubank said.

Likely, they shot the breeze about boating. Renken is president of SeaFox Boats in Moncks Corner and Eubank, president of Palmetto Ford Inc., is an avid boater.

SeaFox boats, crafted in Moncks Corner, will be sold in Mount Pleasant and here at Palmetto Truck World on Savannah Highway. From left are Fred Renken, president of SeaFox Boats; boat stores general manager Tony Blanchard; and Graham Eubank, president of Palmetto Ford Inc.

This time, the talking at some point took on a more professional tone. Renken was eying a place to sell the boats, having added a new bay boat line to complement existing models.

For his part, Eubank had free space available at its Palmetto Truck World locale at 1625 Savannah Highway and next door to its Quick Lane tire and auto center at 558 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. in Mount Pleasant.

Discussions continued in the days following the party. ?I was interested,? Eubank said. He was attracted to SeaFox by its expanding national presence and improving sales but most of all, its quality products. ?They have really good boating lines,? he said.

At the same time, Renken sought to capitalize on Palmetto?s top-notch reputation in the car and truck trade and its locations on major thoroughfares.

?For me, Graham?s passion is boating,? he said. ?If he were not selling cars, he would be on a boat.?

Talks came to fruition in early November, as Palmetto Ford Inc. agreed with SeaFox Boats to serve as its dealer in the Charleston area and beyond.

?I think it?s a home run,? Renken said.

The West Ashley outlet, called SeaFox Boats of Charleston, opened earlier this month at Palmetto Truck World. Eubank plans to showcase 20 boats at a time on the lot and eventually park a boat in the showroom.

Open about two weeks, the operation has recorded three sales already. One sale Thursday was a 24-footer ?rigged out? with a T-top among options, said Tony Blanchard, who was named general manager of the Charleston and Mount Pleasant stores.

?I grew up here,? Blanchard said, noting that he likes boating and people, which fits with his new job.

photo

The Post and Courier

A first-in-the-industry enhancement, according to SeaFox, is this stern anchor locker on its 22-foot center console for easy access when landing on the area?s many beaches.

A week or so ago, the company received town of Mount Pleasant approval for refitting an existing building on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard east of the Cooper. The operation, to be known as SeaFox Boats of Mount Pleasant, should open by mid January and will have about 20 boats, Eubank said.

Boat retailers typically have larger coverage zones than car franchises.

?You don?t have a boat dealership every 10 miles,? Renken said. The reach via Palmetto will be up and down the coast to Georgetown and Beaufort and inland to Orangeburg.

Eubank said Palmetto can step right into boat sales, noting that some of its car lenders also handle boats. The company hired a long-time marine specialist, Robert Howlett, to handle service. He will be based on Savannah Highway.

Eubank said it?s a plus that the SeaFox plant is in the Charleston area. He visited the facility and was able to see the quality of the product first-hand. He was ?really excited, (to) see how a boat is put together. I think that it was a real positive.?

With the Savannah Highway SeaFox outlet being next to Palmetto Truck World, the truck business could attract shoppers who want to buy a vehicle to haul boats, Eubank noted.

But he said Palmetto didn?t get involved because of any sale crossovers, it was because of SeaFox?s strength in the industry.

SeaFox builds a range of boats ? center console, dual console, bay boats and walkarounds ? from 16 to 28 feet in length. And it?s not just models on either end of the size spectrum but 16 footers, 17 footers, 18 footers, etc. The SeaFox boats are fitted with Yahama engines as part of a package arrangement.

At the Charleston Boat Show next month, the manufacturer intends to introduce a new 18-foot bay boat priced around $20,000 that would attract buyers who aren?t quite able to afford the 20-, 22- and 24-foot editions now in the lineup.

photo

The Post and Courier

New SeaFox boats are on display along the eastern edge of the lot at Palmetto Truck World.

?The 18 foot bay (boat) will really impact the market,? Renken said.

SeaFox has brought on design innovations, such as offering an anchor locker at the stern for easy access when pulling up to area beaches.

The deal between SeaFox and Palmetto comes at a time when SeaFox is showing a resurgence after a few economy-driven down years.

?We had a 50 percent (increase) last year to this year,? Renken said. ?The industry as a whole had a 10 percent gain.?

SeaFox has been signing up scores of dealers, notably in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Even without a smaller bay boat in the lineup, the company is the largest seller of bay boats in Texas and Louisiana, Renken said.

In a related move, SeaFox and the Palmetto-based boat dealerships are gaining the endorsement of local fishing guide Champ Smith. He also will be test-driving and fishing a SeaFox 22-foot bay boat. He will be based out of Toler?s Cove Marina in Mount Pleasant near the Ben Sawyer Bridge.

Palmetto and SeaFox?s joint venture should prove advantageous to both entities. In 2011, SeaFox Boats built 1,200 watercraft with sales of $37 million. Estimates for 2012 are a boost to 1,500-1,600 boats and $40 million or so in sales.

Army Specialist back home in E. Texas for the holidays

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV)-

An East Texas soldier is home from Iraq after a year-long tour.

Army Specialist Dedrick Walker was a part of the last groups of US troops to deploy for Iraq back in October 2010.

He's also a part of the last groups to come home from Iraq for good.

Walker says it is good to be home this Christmas--and many more to come.

Military roots run deep in the walker family.

It's evident Bishop L.J. Guillory, Dedrick's father, is proud.

The latest edition to the long line of servicemen is his 23-year-old son, Army Specialist Dedrick Walker.

Dedrick is home for Christmas. Home now, for good.

"He is the biggest present that we have for Christmas," says Guillory, "And his brother and I are just happy, just elated to have him here."

Dedrick's father and dozens of others welcomed him home Sunday, after he served a year in Iraq.
??? ?
Dedrick served as a Preventive Medicine Specialist, helping make the drinking water and living conditions safe for our troops.

He says he helped the Iraqis develop a better quality of life.

His work in Iraq earned him a bronze star.

Dedrick explains that he inspected Iraqi compounds, taught classes, and gave tips to the locals.

Last Christmas morning he was serving overseas. Dedrick says it was then he missed some of the little things, "Just this house, you know, I really missed it. So, I'm not looking for any gifts or anything like that. It's just being around the people I love."

Guillory says, "He is my present from God. My son and I, he is our present from God. That's the biggest present that God could have given me. Santa Claus, St. Nick, all those guys they just don't know. This is the best Christmas I've ever had.

Specialist Walker will attend SFA in the fall, where he will study psychology.

He says he wants to help soldiers cope with mental health issues.

Perry off VA primary ballot; GOP Clown Car wreck (Update: Newt’s off)

[Posted by Karl]

In the lexicon of Rick Perry, ?Oops!?

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.

Perry?s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.

***

They have not examined Gingrich?s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

Things may not be looking much better for Newt, who submitted only 11,050?signatures.? Bachmann, Huntsman, and Santorum failed to submit any signatures, potentially leaving this as a Mitt Romney vs Ron Paul matchup.? Do we all get to point and laugh at those who claim organization doesn?t matter any more?? The practical effect, as GOP fundraiser/consultant Nathan Wurtzel notes, is that the Virginia primary will drop in relevance relative to other contests that day, which will not help GOP efforts to win this swing?state in the general election.

Update: The issues in qualifying for the Virginia ballot are well-known.? Via Philip Klein?s Twitter feed, Stacy Cline notes that in 2007, ?the Giuliani campaign had a full-time lawyer devoted almost entirely to qualifying for the VA ballot? and Team Rudy spent an entire weekend checking to make sute they had enough signatures from each district.? Virginia GOP officials tell John McCormack there is not a write-in line on the ballot.? Klein will be shocked if Newt qualifies.

Update 2: Looks like Newt?s in, making Perry look even worse.

Update 3: Patterico commenter SarahW tweets that she got a robocall to come down and sign a petition? on the day before the robocall. Oops.

Update 4:? Newt Gingrich has also been DQed from the VA primary.? He promises an aggressive write-in campaign.? It may also be futile, if John McCormack?s source was correct ? and, given the circumstances, we might credit some anonymous state party official over Gingrich until definitively proven otherwise.

Update 5: Yep, looks like there?s no write-in for Virginia primaries.?IIRC, the GOP has minimal control over the state legislature? could they amend the law to allow write-ins?? I do not even know if the legislature is in session, but I would think there could be discussion, as?it would benefit the state and?national party to have a more competitive primary. (I presume the fear is that in a year like this, Dems could flood the GOP primary for Obama.)

Phishing scams target military, families, veterans

WASHINGTON (Dec. 23, 2011) -- Anyone who gets caught by phishing scams loses money, time and security. Phishing is usually an unsolicited email that prompts an action, such as divulging secure information, downloading potentially dangerous files, or sending money to an unknown source.

A recent aggressive phishing attack is making the rounds in an email to USAA members, which appears be from USAA, a financial services company that serves service members, their families, and veterans. The email subject begins with "Deposit Posted."

Members are asked to open a Zeus-infected attached file. Once opened, it launches a malicious virus which if launched could provide access to personal information and may require a complete reinstall of the computer operating system. Most USAA members are affiliated with the military.

Other attacks have been directed at U.S. military installations and defense facilities. Official looking emails appear to come from a senior officer or other authority figure not known to the recipient, instructing the recipient to download and install software. This is often portrayed as a critical security measure that must be immediately deployed.

What actually happens is that the software is either a Trojan Horse that will destroy systems and networks, or data mining software that will now be past firewall defenses.

Phishers prey on greed, fear, and especially for military targets, obedience to authority. They have become increasingly sophisticated, and create official looking emails and design sites for gathering data.

Be wary of any unsolicited email that requests secure information or instructs you to download software. It is extremely rare for any financial institution including PayPal and Ebay to ask for such information. Check official websites for information on how to recognize fraudulent emails and sites--including military websites. Always get confirmation from a trusted source before downloading and installing software. If something doesn't seem quite right, it probably isn't.

It will certainly be a merry Christmas for all of Lady Gaga's Little Monsters. Mother Monster herself will play Santa to all her fans when she presents them with an unreleased song on Christmas Day.

"Been racking my brain on what to get Little Monsters for Christmas!! I finally figured it out!!" Gaga tweeted on Thursday (December 22). "On Christmas Day I will leak to you an unreleased Song off Born This Way! It was recorded live, in one take, on the tour bus. Uncensored."

Gaga is currently in Japan, where she will be spending the holiday. "Well, I'll be in Japan right up until Christmas Day," Gaga told MTV News earlier this month. "So I'll be eating with all my Japanese Little Monsters. I like shabu shabu [a form of Japanese hot pot]."

On Tuesday, Gaga tweeted, "Sipping tea in Japan with Haus. Feeling so grateful. We sold about 1 million albums a month worldwide since the release of BORN THIS WAY."

That's not the only thing Gaga has to celebrate. She revealed via Twitter that she is "so happy" that "Hello, Hello," her duet with Elton John, is one of 39 tracks on the short list for a possible Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category.

Lady Gaga, who was MTV News' Top Newsmaker of 2011, will be ringing in the new year in her hometown of New York. The "Marry the Night" singer, along with Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and Florence and the Machine, will watch the ball drop at the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve." The event will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with appearances by Fergie and Jenny McCarthy.

Are you excited for Lady Gaga's new song? Let us know in the comments.

Japan prosecutors raid Olympus (AP)

TOKYO ? Japanese prosecutors raided the headquarters of Olympus Corp. on Wednesday as part of an investigation into the cover-up of massive losses at the camera and medical equipment maker.

Japanese prosecutors confirmed the raid, which was also broadcast on national television. A trail of dark-suited officials were shown marching solemnly into the downtown Tokyo office building.

Olympus said it could not comment on an ongoing investigation. NHK TV said the suburban home of former President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, suspected of helping to orchestrate the cover-up, was also raided.

The deception at Olympus dates back to the 1990s and involved an elaborate scheme to hide 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses. It only came to light in October when then President Michael Woodford blew the whistle on what he thought was strange and excessive spending.

Woodford, a Briton, had been a rare foreigner to head a major Japanese company.

The scandal has raised serious questions about corporate governance in Japan, and whether major companies are complying adequately with global standards.

Woodford was fired after he confronted the company's board of directors with his doubts. In recent weeks, he has been trying to stage a comeback to the top, by appealing to shareholders, employees and others that his return will work to clean up Olympus.

Woodford had questioned exorbitant fees for advice on the acquisition of British medical equipment maker Gyrus Group and other expensive acquisitions in 2008.

Woodford is demanding the resignation of the entire board, including President Shuichi Takayama, who replaced him and initially declared in a news conference that the spending was legitimate.

The battle over who will lead the camera and medical equipment maker and its 40,000 employees could come to a head at the next shareholders' meeting. A date has not been set.

Aqua
Image

Role: The Incarnation of Water
Gender: Female
Current Human Vessel: Takuya Walker

Personality: As the incarnation of water, Aqua was a figure whose personality acted like water. She was unpredictable, often forceful and determined, powerful and emotional, able to go from being calm to suddenly enraged in a matter of moments. Aqua was a protective figure, yet she was very wise, at the same time she was also a compulsive being, prone to whims and acting on thoughts without any consideration to the consequences, it all depended upon how she was feeling. Her words often came out snarky, as if she were speaking in a manner that put herself above those being addressed.

Ignis
Image

Role: The Incarnation of Fire
Gender: Male
Current Human Vessel: Vega Delacroix

Personality: Because he was the embodiment of fire, Ignis was anything but a patient being. He was prone to angering quickly, making rash choices and acting on his gut instinct alone, without giving regard to logic. He was the type to charge in and ask questions later. He loved his freedom, and he bore much faith in humanity. Because of his element however, it was not uncommon for Ignis to act rather dogmatic, asserting his opinion over others. His manner of speech was always rather blunt, he was never afraid to express his opinion.

Rock solid: Nile's 'Innocent Ones' strikes a chord (AP)

NEW YORK ? He's a cheerfully non-iconic rocker, with old-school cool oozing from every pore.

Over three decades of musical exploits, Willie Nile has earned a global cult following, including marquee-name admirers like Bono, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"I'm a longtime friend and fan of Willie," Springsteen sidekick Nils Lofgren tells the AP. "The last couple of E Street Band tours, Bruce has brought him onstage with us and had him sing and play. ... He's great at it."

The "musician's musician," who's repeatedly risen phoenix-like from personal and professional challenges, is back ? and doing some of his best work. Nile is enjoying enthusiastic audiences worldwide and rave reviews for his party-hearty yet socially conscious new album, "The Innocent Ones."

"It's the best; it's the best!" Nile says, marveling over his hard-won creative success. "It's the kind of thing that you dream about as a kid."

Dedicated to the struggling, downtrodden and forgotten everywhere, the album and its "One Guitar" ? a dance-inducing, gets-under-your-skin track anchoring a charity effort that includes Graham Parker ? advocates enjoying life while making a difference.

Don't be fooled by the lip that curls into the perfect flash of punk sneer; the hair that evokes full-blown Chia Pet; the onstage energy-bursts rivaling a Jack Russell Terrier.

Nile is a bonafide rock philosopher.

In fact, he has a university philosophy degree. He also was real-life-schooled in Greenwich Village's famously fertile music heyday.

Not surprisingly, his body of work references Plato, Sartre, and some very weighty matters: terrorism, death, ecological disaster ? all with a "celebrate life" underpinning.

"I've seen breaks out on the levee, in a world so far beyond strange," he sings in the hopeful "Give Me Tomorrow." ... "I've seen hunger in the garden. I've seen empty eyes, full of pain. ... But I have seen things change."

His story includes some rock history moments.

In December 1980, Nile and John Lennon were recording in adjacent studios. Lennon ran out of guitar strings, so Nile had someone take his extras to his famous neighbor.

"I was going to put a note to John ? `Thanks for all the music. I love you. Willie,'" recalled Nile. "Then I thought, ah, too corny. I'll tell him when I see him in person" in a couple of days.

"The last thing he played was my guitar strings," says Nile.

Years later, Nile's Beatle worship came full circle in a much happier way.

On a tour with Ringo Starr, "He comes walkin' right over and he gives me a big hug. I thought, `Beatle sweat! I'm covered with Beatle sweat!' It was a glorious moment," Nile says with a chuckle.

In the early days, he was wedged into the New Dylan pigeonhole that chafed Springsteen. Nile still occasionally employs the half-spoken, freight-train-in-the-distance vocals and folk-strident themes that evoke early Dylan.

That connection intensified a generation later when Bob Dylan's son, Jakob, appeared on a Nile album.

Recent critics have labeled Nile's work folk-punk; roots-rock; singer-songwriter; power-pop; classic rock; alternative rock, Pete Seeger channeled through Joey Ramone.

He uses the term "New Classic," denoting a "timeless quality." But his personal favorite is "one-man Clash."

Nile now has his own record company. He's had contracts with two major labels. Weary of "hustlers" and gripped with legal woes, he says he walked away from the business twice.

During a decade-long hiatus, he continued songwriting but primarily focused on family in his native Buffalo, N.Y. At a recent performance, he sang the new album's sweetly refreshing "Sideways Beautiful" in honor of a daughter.

"Some years were very thin" while trying to "raise four kids on fumes," he concedes, lamenting the effects on his loved ones. But "tell me ... who has not had a tough road?"

Despite years of relentless hype as "the next big thing," it was nearly impossible to get his foot back in the stage and studio doors. He's made his own way ? aiming simply to strike a chord in whatever heart is meant to receive it.

Now, "I'm having a great time," he declares. "I'm makin' music. I'm fightin' the fight. ... I've never felt more alive."

It's taken a village to get there.

"The Innocent Ones" was already a success in Europe, but its U.S. rollout hit a snag. The fans ? seizing on his premise that "One Guitar," or one voice, matters ? pumped nearly $20,000 into an artistic fundraising site to help hasten its American release.

"I got to tour with the Who across the U.S. I've sung with Bruce Springsteen at Giants Stadium in front of 70,000 people for half an hour," says Nile. But it's moments like this that leave him struggling for words.

"These are hard times economically. ... The fans totally ..." he says haltingly. "I was very, very ? I mean, how great is it?"

On both sides of the ocean, crowds are responding to Nile's call to action.

While his residence is Manhattan, he considers himself a citizen of "wherever my shoes are.'"

In January, he'll return to the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, N.J., for Light of Day, a weekend-long musical blowout benefiting Parkinson's disease. Last time, Springsteen ? a frequent surprise headliner ? backed Nile's rousing performance of "Heaven Help the Lonely," dedicated to the people of Haiti.
